8.2 Comparability of measuring results
If the particle size distribution is measured in order to es-
tablish whether certain product properties are met, both the
operator and the measuring device will have a certain influ-
ence on the result.
Designers of measuring devices are fully aware of this and
thus try to eliminate the influence of the operator on the re-
sult as far as this is possible. The effect of the applied
measuring techniques on the result can however not be
completely eliminated.
It is thus evident that particle size distributions measured
with the sedimentation method (scanning photo sedimen-
tograph "analysette 20") and those obtained by analysing a
refraction image will deviate from each other, even if only
slightly.
In the measurement of particles sizes by means of dif-
fracted image analysis, all dimensions of irregular particles
are registered and included in the result. The length of a
needle-shaped particle is one such registered dimension.
When comparing particle size distribution values obtained
with different methods, the shape of the particles must thus
be taken into account.
