If the flow does not exist, check the alert information for the policy matching with this

packet.

• If the connection-rate alert is not specified, the connection rate limit processing is not

needed on this packet.

• If the connection-rate alert is specified, compute the number of connections which arrived

during the last second. If this number exceeds the threshold, perform the specified alert
action. See

Setting Up Policies

on page 3-5 for alert action details.

Aggregate-bandwidth monitoring involves the following process:

• The packet arrives at the interface of the appliance.
• Validate if a flow can be identified with the incoming packet.

If the flow does not exist, check the aggregate bandwidth alert information for the policy

matching with this packet.

If the aggregate bandwidth alert is specified, create the flow with the alert information.

If the aggregate bandwidth alert is not specified, create the flow with the alert
information.

If the flow exists and the aggregate bandwidth is specified, compute the number of octets

which arrived in the last second. If this number exceeds the threshold, perform the
specified alert action.

Using the Set Alert Frequency Advanced Option

Alerts are automatically generated twice per second. Normally, the alert is generated once per

policy (for connection rate and aggr-bandwidth) and once per session (for connection bandwidth).

The "log always" option increments the alert counter but does not regenerate the alert.
You can use the frequency option of the "set alert" command to allow users to generate alert log

messages with the configured frequency. This option must be used with caution, since even a low

value can generate a lot of log messages.
