4.3. 

Antenna and its location 

 

The  device  with  built-in  GSM/GPRS  communication  module  includes  an  an-
tenna. It is worth taking care to position the antenna well. With a better signal, 
the  current  consumption  of  the  device  is  significantly  reduced.  The  unit  can 
communicate with lower transmit power, there is no connection dropout, no re-
peated connection attempts and the unit can enter power saving mode earlier. 
When the unit is battery operated, it is recommended to always install the best 
possible antenna to reduce energy consumption and extend the unit's operating 
time, even for situations where the signal is above the critical threshold. 
When installing the station, it is important to take care of the appropriate loca-
tion of the GSM antenna also from the point of view of its surroundings. Placing 
the equipment, including the antenna, in enclosed concrete spaces or all-metal 
cabinets rapidly reduces the characteristics and reception capabilities of the sig-
nal. In these cases, it is advisable to move the antenna out of the enclosure. 
Reliable GPRS and SMS communication requires a GSM field strength at the an-
tenna location of at least 25% of the optimum required strength measured by 
the unit during installation.  
In case of lower signal strength, it may happen that some GPRS data sessions 
will not take place at the set time, but only on other days with better conditions 
for GSM signal propagation. 
Antennas are typically supplied with an antenna coaxial cable of defined length. 
This  cable  can  be  extended  if  necessary.  However,  with  each  metre  of  cable 
there is signal attenuation, and it is recommended to use cables with low atte-
nuation per metre for extension.
