6.3.2 Setting the toothed belt pretension
Warning
The toothed belt is set to the specified value in the factory and is thus maintenance-free over its entire service life.
The pretension of the toothed belt diminishes during storage and operation.
This is a normal process and not an
indication of wear.

If the measured natural frequency of the toothed belt is outside the specified range, adapt the toothed belt pretension
as specified in the relevant chapter in the respective operating instructions.
6.3.3 Additional information on checking the toothed belt pretension
The correct toothed belt pretension is of critical importance for the service life of the toothed belt as well as the position-
ing accuracy and performance of the toothed belt axis.
The conventional method for measuring the toothed belt pretension via the deflection force is too inaccurate and can
therefore not be used. Accurate results are achieved by measuring the oscillation frequency. The natural frequency of a
belt is based on its tension (strand force), mass and strand length.
Note
The strand length is the oscillating length of a belt.
Since the strand length cannot be determined directly at the toothed belt axis by easy means, the toothed belt pretension
test equipment is used to position the clamping body.
A force stimulus is applied to the toothed belt to start it oscillating. The natural frequency of the toothed belt generated
in this way is recorded using a meter and displayed as a frequency value in hertz.
