Function and application
A toothed belt on a drive hollow shaft converts the rotary movement of a motor
into a linear movement. The slide unit
4
will then move backwards and forwards.
The reference position of the slide unit can be detected using an inductive
proximity switch, switch lug and sensor bracket (
è
accessories).
The ELGR toothed belt axis has been designed for the positioning of effective
loads. It is approved for slide operating mode.
The ELGR is not permitted for application conditions in which vegetable and
water−soluble greases or oils can reach the toothed belt.
Note
The ELGR toothed belt axis is not self−locking: When input torque is not applied,
the slide can be moved freely. Generally, a latching function of the complete
system can be achieved with motors with an integrated holding brake or with
high gear ratios or self−locking gear design (e.g. for vertical operation).
· Choose the corresponding Festo motor from our catalogue (

Drives"

You will then be operating two devices which are especially matched to each
other.
· Adhere to the limit values for forces and speeds

and Characteristic curves."

Transport and storage
Warning
During vertical transport, an unsecured slide unit can fall down (crushing).
· Transport the product with the transport packaging horizontally on the guide
rods.
· Take into account the weight of the product. It weights up to 30kg.
· Ensure the following storage conditions:
short storage times and
cool, dry, shaded, corrosion−protected storage locations.
No oils, greases or fat−solvent fumes.
In this way you can ensure the capability of the toothed belt.
4
Conditions for the safe use of the product
Warning
Unexpected fast−moving masses can cause injury to people or damage to
property (danger of fingers being crushed).
· Apply power to the drive motor, at first limited to low speeds and torques.
Free−running toothed belts can catch objects (injuries).
· Make sure that no objects, such ashair or clothing can be pulled into the
toothed belt axis by the free−running toothed belt (e.g. through a cover).
Note
Improper handling can result in malfunctions.
· Make sure that all the instructions in this chapter are observed. This way the
product will perform as intended.
· Compare the maximum values specified in these operating instructions with
those of your actual application (e.g.forces, torques, temperatures, masses,
speeds).
Operation of the product in compliance with the relevant safety regulations is
contingent on adherence to the load limits.
· Take into consideration the ambient conditions at the location of use.
Corrosive elements in the environment (e.g.ozone) will reduce the service life of the
product.
· Please comply with national and local safety laws and regulations.
· Remove transport packaging, such as foils and cardboard.
The packing is intended for recycling (except for: oiled paper = other waste).
· Unauthorised product modification is not permitted.
· Note the warnings and instructions on the product and in the relevant operating
instructions.
· Take the tolerance of the tightening torques into account. Unless specified
otherwise, the tolerance is ±20%.
5
Installation
5.1 Mechanical assembly
· Do not modify the settings of screws
and threaded pins if there is no
request to do so in these operating
instructions.
· Fit the motor onto the toothed belt
axis in accordance with the assembly
instructions for the motor mounting
kit recommended in the catalogue.

Fitting in a vertical or sloping position
Warning
Suddenly falling masses can cause
personal injury and material damage
(crushing). If there is a power failure or
if the toothed belt breaks, the work
load will slide down.
· Make sure that you only use
motors with an integrated
spring−loaded holding brake.
· Check whether external safety
measures against damage due to
toothed−belt fracture are necessary
(e.g.toothed latches or moving
bolts).
