Ethernet Connections
The Control port on all Quantum models and the Media I and Media II
network ports on the Elite models are Ethernet ports on RJ-45 connectors.
The Link and Activity LEDs on these RJ-45 connectors (shown at right)
indicate the status of the Ethernet connection. The green Link LED indicates
that the processor is properly connected to an Ethernet LAN. This LED should light
steadily. The amber ACT (Activity) LED indicates transmission of data on the connector.
This LED should flicker while the Quantum communicates.
Use a CAT 5 shielded twisted pair (STP) cable to connect these ports to a computer
(direct connection) or to a hub or router (indirect connection) to enable the processor to
be controlled by the Quantum Control Software or to obtain image files from a QGE 100
or the Internet. Ethernet cables are limited to a length of 328 feet (100 meters).
NOTES:
•
Do not use standard telephone cables. Telephone cables do not support Ethernet
or Fast Ethernet.
•
Do not stretch or bend the cables, because this can cause transmission errors.
You can make either a direct or an indirect Ethernet connection between the Quantum
and your computer or network using the appropriate cable:
• Crossover cable — Direct connection between the computer and the Quantum
processor. A 6-foot (1.8 meters) crossover cable is provided with the Quantum.
•
Straight-through (patch) cable — Indirect connection between the Quantum
processor and an Ethernet LAN via a router, hub, or QC 101 controller

The Ethernet cable must be properly terminated for your application as either a crossover
or a straight-through cable. Figure 41 shows how to wire the Ethernet connector for each
connection type.
A cable that is wired as T568A at one end
and T568B at the other (Tx and Rx pairs
reversed) is a "crossover" cable.
A cable that is wired the same at both ends
is called a "straight-through" cable, because
no pin or pair assignments are swapped.
