About this appendix

This appendix defines opcode tables and describes the procedure for configuring them.

E.2

Opcode table overview

Opcode tables are used in ROC protocol to minimize the number of polls that a host program must 
make to obtain the information that it requires. 

Note: Opcode tables can be accessed only by host programs using ROC protocol for Model 3711 
communications. Opcode tables cannot be accessed by host programs using Modbus protocol.

In a single request, a host program can address one or more contiguous memory locations. To address 
non-contiguous memory locations, multiple requests are required. Opcode tables allow you to define 
an overlay on memory locations, so that non-contiguous locations appear contiguous to the host 
program, and can therefore be addressed in one request rather than many.

Configure the opcode tables to meet the requirements of specific host programs. Opcode tables should 
be developed in conjunction with the host program.

The Model 3711 provides four separate opcode tables, and each opcode table can contain up to 44 
memory locations. Each opcode table may be used by one or many Modbus communications 
programs, and a host program can use as many opcode tables as desired.
