Quick Start Guideline for the EATON Ampgard RV Soft-Starter
If any part of this procedure conflicts from the actual starter contact the factory to adjust startup
procedure. If problems are encountered during the steps below consult your Ampgard RVSS
training Commissioning and Troubleshooting references or contact the CSC at 1-800-523-3775 (or
e-mail [email protected]).
As each section below is completed, check the box on the right side of the form.
Getting Started
All site and EATON safety and PPE requirements understood and met.
OK
Obtain a copy of the Ampgard RVSS Commissioning Report pdf form. Fill out the
‘Installed Location’ and ‘Site and Motor Information’ sections.
OK
Verify proper lockout/tagout LOTO and location safety procedures are observed.
OK
Power-Off Inspections
Perform a physical check of the equipment using the ‘Confirm Installation Conditions
comply with EATON Ampgard RVSS requirements’ section of the commissioning
form. Check line and load-side cable connections for code compliance and tightness.
Check for sources of load-side capacitance.
ALWAYS check the motor terminal box for
surge caps. They must be permanently disconnected before attempting a start. Cable
conductor runs must be less than 1,000 ft. Note: this refers to cable conductors, not
cable. If it is two per phase, the max distance reduces in half to 500 ft., etc.
OK
If applicable, verify keylock interlock operation.
OK
Perform continuity test on all power and control fuses.
OK
Check connection of all fiber optic connections from the IOB board to the RV Soft-Star
truck fanout PCBs. Physically tug on all cables to make sure they are firmly seated on
each end.
OK
Perform normal startup procedure steps (megging cables, dielectric tests, etc.).
Remember to disconnect MV cables from Starter before IR meggering.
OK
Low-Voltage Control Power Inspections
With the isolation switch in the off position plug an extension cord into the test plug in
the upper cell low voltage control compartment.
OK
Verify power-up of the control circuit, especially the motor protective relay (MPR) and
RVSS control in the lower compartment. Verify green LEDs lit on C445 BCM, IOB
(motherboard and daughter DSP card) and 48V PS located in the lower MV cell.
OK
Verify programming of the MPR including programming notes on the schematic.
Relay should NOT be set for reduced voltage operation.
OK
