Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP)
The Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) (Figure 16 and Figure 17) is a standardized method that can
be used to establish network structures including a ring. The protocol breaks the network into a
logical tree and deactivates redundant paths or activates them as required. The first step is to select
a root bridge, which depicts the root of the tree to be created. Starting from the root bridge, the path
to all of the other bridges in the network is specified. The paths that can be used for communication
are detected via the path costs to the individual bridges.
