9.2 Wi-Fi Wireless Networking
This phone supports IEEE 802.11b/g wireless networking, which you
can use to connect to a public wireless network, private wireless network
access point, or other supported WiFi compliant computer or device.
WiFi is the default network connection setting. If the phone has not been
activated with WiFi, or has not successfully connected to a wireless
access point, then GPRS will be used as the default connection method.
You can use the Comm Manager to activate/deactivate the phone
and wireless functions. After activating WiFi wireless networking, the
phone will automatically detect any nearby WiFi wireless network signal
sources. When the phone successfully detects a WiFi wireless network
signal, you must select the wireless network and connection settings to
use. If the wireless network uses security features, then the key must be
obtained from the wireless network administrator.
If your WiFi wireless network does not broadcast its SSID, then you must
manually enter the new wireless network settings on the phone. You can
also modify the currently available WiFi wireless network settings.
If the connected wireless network access point or Ad-hoc device does
not support DHCP, then the phone will not be able to obtain a valid
IP address and connect to the Internet. Please contact your wireless
network administrator for an IP address and manually enter it. If you
wish to use customized DNS servers, you can also manually enter the
IP address for the DNS server. To manually configuring the IP address,
please refer to Chapter 11.
When connected, you can view the WiFi connectivity information at the
Today screen. It is also possible to view the WiFi connectivity information
or configure WiFi power saving mode using the Comm Manager.
Using WiFi wireless networking will consume extra battery power. If
you do not need WiFi wireless networking, please turn it off to improve
standby time.
(Note 1) Public wireless networks include public transportation
stations, airports, and restaurants that provide wireless networks
for public use. Some public wireless networks may require a fee.
