General

This technique is used in circuit breakers rated up to 36 kV; however, the
basic principle illustrated in Figure A.6 (under normal conditions current
carrying conductors are surrounded by compressed air) is used in circuit
breakers rated up to 765 kV.

As the air blast continues, the energy

The arc is extinguished at the end of 1/2 cycle.

of the arc is absorbed by further cooling
and the dielectric strength is increased.
