Safety:

GFS-FS is used to perform recurring high pressure fills of the carbon fiber composite

reference gas cylinder. The fill pressure of the reference gas cylinder is within the safe
operating pressure rating specified by the cylinders’ manufacturer, but ideally the cylinder
filling should be performed in a location that minimizes the possible risks of injury due to the
failure of any cylinder, tube or connector at high pressure. The design of GFS-FS allows
filling of the reference gas cylinder to occur slowly so that the temperature of the cylinder
remains low. The filling operation can be largely unattended once it is started. See Section
4.3 for safe cylinder filling procedures.

Pressurized gases are potentially hazardous. Energy stored in these gases can be released

unexpectedly and with extreme force. Pressurized systems should be assembled and operated
only by personnel who have been instructed in proper safety practices.

Ventilation:

If any gas other than air is used to fill the reference gas cylinder, proper

ventilation should be in place in the location where the reference gas cylinder is filled and the
GFS2102 system is used. Volatile or toxic gases especially must be vented, and even inert
gases present a real hazard to operators, especially in small spaces, if they force the oxygen
levels in the room to drop.

Convenience to GFS2102 system:

Minimizing the distance between the filling location and the

GFS2102 system is desired since the reference gas cylinder must be transported between the
two locations, often while pressurized. A molded plastic case is provided for each reference gas
cylinder assembly to make transport of the cylinder safer and more convenient.

Vacuum availability:

One method for ensuring gas purity after changing test gases in a

reference gas cylinder or opening the cylinder to atmosphere is to evacuate the cylinder
using vacuum before refilling (See Section 4.3.2). If this method will be used, the vacuum
source and connection should be convenient to the cylinder filling location.

Never connect and open the reference gas cylinder to the vacuum pump while pressure

remains in the cylinder or damage could occur to the vacuum pump. Always vent the cylinder to
atmosphere first.

3.3

SETUP

Before setting up the GFS2102 system, see Section 3.2 for information on site requirements.

To set up the GFS2102 system, first unpack it following the instructions in Section 3.1. Then follow the
set up instructions in Sections 3.3.1 to 3.3.14 sequentially.

3.3.1

POSITION THE VIBRATION ISOLATION TABLE

Refer to the Site Requirements section of this manual and then position the granite vibration
isolation table where you want the table and draft enclosure (See Section 3.2). Take into
consideration positioning for everything including granite table, GFS draft enclosure, and a lab
bench for the LCM, MFC-CB, device under test, flow controllers and other flow path hardware,
and computer. When possible, use a bubble (spirit) level and the four adjustable feet on the steel
support stand to level the surface of the granite table surface.

The granite vibration isolation table top weighs over 600 lb. (270 kg). Professional

assistance and special equipment are needed to move it into position in the laboratory.
