To obtain the best result was difficult when drying was done using Heat and
Vent methods in that depending on outside and factory conditions, drying
could take anything from 24 hours to 4 days with a further cooling period of
sometimes two days. The introduction of the dehumidifier and the ‘closed
batch’ drying system resulted in energy costs being reduced by as much as
83%. The temperature to dry was lowered to 50ºC and water was extracted
at humidities of 30% which according to the tasters, gave a better product.
Times to dry were reduced to around 20 hours with 3 hours cooling, and
handling problems disappeared overnight. The introduction of the DH334BH
with its ability to take moisure from the product in large quantities at lower
humidities has enhanced the drying performance in this area with even lower
temperatures now being used. Confectionery drying has become a very
successful application for good dehumidifiers with correct accurate control of all
stages of the process.
2.6 Other Applications
The drying of high quality skins in the leather industry has shown a very
high saving in energy cost of some 73% with a marked improvement in the
quality of the skin, coupled to the fact that no sperm oil was then necessary to
condition the skin as is the case with conventional drying.
Textiles and latex rubber are other areas where dehumidifiers have shown
their total flexibility and ability to produce a high quality produce at a very
economical cost on a regular turn around time. Most products that rely on the
addition of water in a prior process can be dried very successfully by CALOREX
dehumidifiers.
