SECTION E: PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE

As the motor is Air-filled, no lubrication or other maintenance
is required, and generally Barnes Pumps will give very reliable
service and can be expected to operate for years on normal
sewage pumping without failing. However as with any
mechanical piece of equipment a preventive maintenance
program is recommended and suggested to include the
following checks:

1) Inspect impeller and body for excessive build-up or

clogging and repair as required per section F-1.

3) Inspect outer shaft seal and replace as required per

section F-2.

4) Motor and inner seal repair per section F-3.

SECTION F: SERVICE AND REPAIR

NOTE:

 All item numbers in ( ) refer to Figures 6 & 7.

WARNING !

ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE PUMP MOTORS MUST

BE DISCONNECTED AND LOCKED OUT TO PREVENT

ANY DANGEROUS ELECTRICAL HAZARDS OR

PERSONNEL DANGER BEFORE ANY SERVICE WORK

IS DONE TO THE PUMP.

CAUTION !

OPERATING PUMP BUILDS UP HEAT AND PRESSURE;

ALLOW TIME FOR PUMP TO COOL TO ROOM

TEMPERATURE BEFORE HANDLING OR SERVICING.

CAUTION !

ALWAYS WEAR EYE PROTECTION WHEN WORKING

ON PUMPS.

F-1) Impeller and Volute Service:

F-1.1) Disassembly and Inspection:

To clean out the volute (3), or clean out or replace impeller (4),
or replace wear ring (7), disconnect power, remove cap screws
(1) on 250 frame units or hex nuts (19) on 320 frame units, and
vertically lift motor assembly from the volute (3). Clean out the
volute, if necessary, examine wear ring (7) and replace if worn.
If the wear ring (7) requires replacing, split the wear ring (7) and
remove, be careful not to damage the suction cover (6). Clean
and examine impeller (4) for pitting or wear. To remove Impeller
(4), remove socket head screw (8) and washer (9).

The impeller is keyed onto the shaft with a square key
(21-supplied with motor) and to remove, pull impeller straight
off the shaft using a wheel puller if required. Inspect gaskets
(10) if suction cover (6) has been removed, and gasket (11) if
adapter plate (2A or 2B) has been removed, and replace if cut
or damaged. Before reinstallation, check the motor shaft and
impeller bore for damage.

F-1.2) Reassembly:

To install wear ring (7) first apply retaining compound to the
bore of suction cover (6) and then press wear ring (7) into bore
of suction cover (6) until seated. Position gasket (10) on volute,
and locate suction cover (6) on volute (3), apply thread locking
compound to cap screws (5), set legs (16) into place on suction
plate (6), place washers (15) on cap screws (5) that are used
on legs (16) and torque cap screws (5) into volute (3) to 92ft.
lbs. On 250 frame units, place gasket (11) and adapter plate
(2A) onto motor (17). On 320 frame units, adapter plate (2B)
should still be attached to motor (17). To install impeller (4)
apply a thin film of oil to motor shaft and slide impeller straight
onto shaft, keeping keyways lined up. Drive key (21) into
keyway. Locate impeller washer (9) on shaft, apply thread
locking compound to socket head screw (8) threads, thread into
shaft and torque to 35 ft. lbs. Rotate impeller to check for
binding.

On 250 frame units, place gasket (10) in position on volute (3)
and install impeller and motor assembly onto volute (3). Apply
thread locking compound to threads of each cap screw (1) and
insert into motor and volute assembly and torque to 24 ft. lbs.
Check for free rotation of motor and impeller.
On 320 frame units, Place gasket (10) in position on volute (3),
apply thread locking compound to the threads of each stud (18),
thread nuts (19) onto studs (18) and torque to 24 ft. lbs. Install
impeller and motor assembly  onto volute (3). Check for free
rotation of motor and impeller.

F-2)  Outer  Shaft Seal  Service:

CAUTION !

HANDLE SEAL PARTS WITH EXTREME CARE. DO NOT

SCRATCH OR MAR LAPPED SURFACES.

F-2.1) Disassembly and Inspection:

To expose outer shaft seal (20) for examination, remove
Impeller and Volute per Section F-1.1. Set motor assembly (17)
in the up position to prevent loss of oil. Remove snap ring from
motor shaft, then retaining ring (20D), spring (20C) and rotating
member (20B) from shaft, See Fig. 3. Examine all seal parts
and especially contact faces. Inspect seal for signs of wear
such as uneven wear pattern on stationary members, chips and
scratches on either seal face.

DO NOT

 interchange seal

components, replace the entire shaft seal (20). If replacing seal,
remove stationary (20A) from mounting plate by prying out with
flat screw driver.
