8.5 Operation 

The switch assembly is selectable to operate in  either  Manual  or  Auto  Mode  from  the  switch 
control menu of either amplifier. In Manual mode the user will have to navigate through the 
amplifier menu and command the waveguide switch to change position, placing the amplifier 
Online or Offline. In the Auto mode the fault status of the online amplifier will trigger the no-fault 
offline amplifier to be transferred to Online.  
The following steps can be used to verify the waveguide switch operation for the first time from 
PA1 in 

Local/Manual mode

. 

a.

 

On PA1 main screen set PA to LOCAL mode. Depress the Menu keypad and use the Arrow 
keypad to scroll to the highlighted Switch Control menu. Depress the Enter keypad. The 
switch mimic diagram will appear. 

b.

 

From PA1 switch control screen. Verify the mode is in Manual. Use the Arrow keypad to move 
to the Switch Rotate field. Depress the Enter keypad a few times and verify that the waveguide 
switch rotates upon the command to switch. 

c.

 

Command the switch rotation so that the front panel Online LED is ON. Verify the front-panel 
mimic diagram displays PA1 to system output port and PA2 to RF termination. 

d.

 

Command the switch rotation so that the front panel Online LED is OFF. Verify the front-panel 
mimic diagram displays PA1 to RF termination and PA2 to system output port. 

To verify the automatic switch in local/auto mode use the following steps: 
a.

 

On PA1 control panel, select PA1 Online and then Auto mode from the Switch Control menu. 

b.

 

Verify that PA2 switch control menu also displays Auto mode. 

c.

 

Verify the manual Switch rotate command is disabled. 

d.

 

Create a PA 1 fault. 

e.

 

Verify the PA2 is switched Online and PA1 is terminated. 

f.

 

Reset PA1 fault. 

To verify the switch RF inhibit function use the following steps: 
a.

 

Set RF output power of both amplifiers to (Rated –10) dBm. 

b.

 

Manually rotate and hold the waveguide switch S1 to the position halfway between the two 
normal operating positions. 

c.

 

Verify that the RF output power drops to zero and is muted while the amplifier is either 
Online or Offline (termination) completely.
