Engine Operation
4-4.7. In-Flight Restart
CAUTION: Do not shutdown an engine in-flight for practice or
training purposes. Whenever engine failure is simulated, do so by
reducing power.
A few minutes exposure to temperatures and airspeed at flight
altitudes can have the same effect on an inoperative engine as hours
of cold-soak in sub-arctic conditions. If the engine must be restarted,
consider descending to warmer air. Closely monitor for excessive oil
pressure as engine RPM increases. Allow the engine to warm at
minimum RPM before continued flight operations.
Supplement AFM/POH with the following instructions:
1. Mixture Control ............................................... IDLE CUT-OFF
2. Throttle............................................................. 1/4 OPEN
3. Ignition Switch................................................. START (hold until engine starts)
4. Mixture Control ............................................... Advance slowly until proper
proper fuel air mixture is reached
5. Throttle............................................................. Adjust for desired RPM

1. Fuel Selector .................................................... OFF
2. Mixture............................................................. IDLE CUT-OFF
3. Throttle............................................................. CLOSED
4. Ignition Switch................................................. OFF
5. Execute AFM/POH EMERGENCY/FORCED LANDING PROCEDURES and
LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
4-4.9. Propeller Strike
A propeller strike is any incident (whether or not the engine is operating) in which the
propeller contacts a foreign object that 1)results in the necessity to repair the propeller
blade(s) (other than minor blade dressing) or 2)results in loss of engine RPM at the time of
contact. Propeller strikes can cause engine and component damage even if the propeller
continues to rotate. Perform a “Propeller Strike Inspection” according to the instructions
in Section 6-5.1.1 of M-0, Standard Practice Maintenance Manual after any propeller
strike event.
