Chapter 7 Record Setup
7.2.3 Video Encode Type (H.264, H.265)
Video compression is a means of encoding a digital video file in a way that reduces the
size of the file by removing unnecessary or unimportant information. There are many
types of video compression, however the two standards that have been adopted by
most CCTV manufacturers are called H.264 and H.265.
H.265 is the newer of the two compression formats and it has considerable
compression advantages over H.264; it can achieve nearly twice the compression
amount at the same video quality. However, not all video playback programs and
devices can accept it so you should check the device you are going to play your saved
videos on before deciding which standard you are going to use. If you are using
Windows 10 you may need to add an extension available from Microsoft.
Video Encode Type: To change the compression type simply select the type you want
from the drop-down menu and click Apply in the bottom right of the page.
Changing to H.265 can make significant savings to your storage space.
