Installing An Industry-Standard Telephone Station Board
In The Impact FX Digital Communications System
Understanding Industry-Standard Telephone Support
The Impact FX digital communications systems support the use of industry-standard telephones (IST) through
IST station boards. IST installations may require a dual-tone multiple frequency (DTMF) receiver card if you plan
to install a large population of ISTs.
There are four models of IST board available for use:
•
FXIST–08 supports eight industry-standard telephones,
•
FXIST–12 supports 12 industry-standard telephones,
•
FXISTM–16 supports 16 industry-standard telephones with message waiting.
Detailing The Necessary Equipment
In addition to the IST station board and at least one line board, you may need to install an auxiliary board or main
interface board if you need to provide DTMF receiver coverage for a large population of ISTs. The services board
provides onboard DTMF receiver circuitry capable of supporting one industry-standard telephone dialing at a
time. This provision is adequate if your site requires only a few industry-standard telephones; however, if you
intend to support a population of industry-standard telephones that will generate a large volume of outgoing call
traffic, you will need to provide additional DTMF receivers for these telephones. To do this, you must add an
auxiliary board or main interface board to the system.
You can use either an auxiliary board or an interface board to expand IST handling:

Besides the onboard DTMF receivers that some boards provide, the auxiliary board accepts optional DTMF
receiver cards (up to three cards per board) and the Interface board accepts one optional receiver card. Each
receiver card allows four ISTs to dial simultaneously. The overall number of DTMF receivers you need to install
depends upon how active the ISTs will be at the site. See the section titled Determining the Board Configuration
for more details.
If you do need additional DTMF receivers, the best method to obtain them is to add the proper board. Any time
you add a DTMF receiver card to a board, you are occupying a card slot that could be used for other purposes,
such as a communications card to provide serial interface to the system, or a synchronizing card for T1/E1
operation. If you find that you do need to add receiver cards to an auxiliary board, you can do so without taking
any programming action to activate them.
