Spread Drive Systems
Use the illustrations (Figures 5-19, 5-20) at the
right to identify the mechanical components of
the spread drive systems, which actually consists
of separately powered upper and lower drive
subsystems.
Upper Spread Subsystem
In the right endframe, the upper spread
servomotor (Figure 5-19, A) powers the upper
spread subsystem. A shaft from the drive motor
extends directly into a gear reducer (B). The
output shaft is connected to a drive pulley (C).
This pulley drives a belt (Figure 5-19, D)
which spans across the width of the machine to
another pulley in the left endframe (Figure 5-20,
E) which sits on a jackshaft (F).
When the belt moves, the two spreader jaws,
one attached to front side and one attached
to the back side of the belt, move in opposite
directions.
The action of the spreader jaws is pneumatically
controlled.
Lower Spread Subsystem
This discussion will cover the left side lower
spread components. An identical set of equipment
handles the right side lower spread action.
In the left endframe, the left lower transfer
motor (Figure 5-20, G) powers the left lower
transfer system. A shaft from this motor extends
directly into a drive pulley (H).
This pulley drives a belt (I) which in turn
power two sets of oppositely turning pulleys
(J, K). These pulleys turn two sets of shafts (L,
M).
The shafts drive two sets of pulleys (N, O),
which power the lower spreader belts, causing
them to stretch the flatwork toward the left and
right sides.
