AIR C O N D IT IO N IN G 1A-16
N orm ally, air conditioning system s are charged m aking use
o f the J-8393 Charging S tatio n w hich uses the 30 lb-container.
Evacuating and Charging P rocedures are n o te d later in this
section.
The
15 oz. disposable cans are generally used for
m iscellaneous o p erations such as flushing.
COMPRESSOR O IL
Special refrigeration lub rican t should be used in the system .
This oil is as free fro m m oisture and contam inants as it is
possible to attain by h u m a n processes. This co n d itio n should
be preserved b y im m ediately capping th e b o ttle w hen n o t in
use.
See “ Air C onditioning S ystem C apacities” for the to ta l
system oil capacity.
INSPECTION AND
P R E -D E LIVE R Y INSPECTION
1. C heck th a t engine exhaust is suitably ventilated.
2. C heck th e belt for p ro p er tension.
3. W ith controls positioned for operation o f the system ,
o p erate the unit for ten m inutes at approxim ately 2000
rpm . O bserve the clu tch pulley b o lt to see th a t the
com pressor is operating a t th e same speed as th e clutch
pulley. A ny speed variation indicates clutch slippage.
4. B efore tu rn in g o ff th e engine, check the sight glass to see
th a t th e u n it has a sufficient R efrigerant charge. The glass
should be clear, alth o u g h during m ilder w eather it m ay
show traces o f bubbles. F o am in the flow indicates a low
charge. N o liquid visible and n o tem p eratu re differential
betw een com pressor inlet and o u tle t lines, indicates no
charge.
5. C heck refrigerant hose connections:
" O " ring Connections
— Check to rq u e o f fittings as
ch a rted la ter in this section u nder “ R efrigerant Line
C onnections;” reto rq u e if required. L eak test the
com plete system .
Hose Clamp Connections
— I f clam p screw to rq u e is less
th a n 10 in. lbs., retig h ten to 20-25 in. lbs. D o n o t tighten
to new hose specifications o r hose leakage m ay occur.
L eak te st th e com plete system .
6. I f there is evidence o f an oil leak, check th e com pressor
to see th a t th e oil charge is satisfactory.
N O T E : A slight am ount o f oil leakage at the
compressor fro n t seal is considered normal.
7. C heck the system con tro ls for p roper operation.
Due to the p orosity o f th e refrigerant hoses and connec
tions, th e system refrigerant level will show a definite drop
a fte r a period o f tim e. Since th e com pressor oil is carried
th ro u g h o u t the entire system m ixed w ith th e refrigerant, a low
refrigerant level will cause a dangerous lack o f lubrication.
T herefore th e refrigerant charge in the system has a definite
tie-in w ith th e am o u n t o f oil fo u n d in th e com pressor and an
insufficient charge m ay eventually lead to an oil build-up in
the evaporator.
COMPRESSOR SER IA L NUMBER
The com pressor serial num ber is located on th e serial
num ber plate on to p o f th e com pressor. The serial num ber
consists o f a series o f num bers and letters. This serial num ber
should be referenced on all form s and correspondence related
to th e servicing o f this part.
PERIODIC SERVICE
6000 M ILE INSPECTION
1. C heck u n it fo r any indication o f a refrigerant leak.
2. I f there is an in dication o f an oil leak, check the
com pressor for p roper oil charge.
N O T E : A slight am ount o f oil leakage at the
compressor fro n t seal is considered normal.
3. C heck sight glass for proper charge o f R efrigerant-12.
4. T ighten th e com pressor brace and su p p o rt b o lts and
check the b elt tension.
5. C heck refrigerant hose connections as in S tep 5 o f
“ Pre-Delivery In sp ectio n .”
PERIODIC SERVICE
• In sp ec t condenser regularly to be sure th a t the fins are
n o t plugged w ith leaves or o th e r foreign m aterial.
• C heck evaporator drain tubes regularly for d irt or
restrictions.
• A t least once a year, check the system for p roper
refrigerant charge and th e flexible hoses fo r brittleness,
w ear or leaks.
• Every 6000 miles check sight glass for low refrigerant
level.
• C heck belt tension regularly.
