Principal Components

r e q u i r e d to a p p l y a n d re le a se the p re ssu re w h i c h holds

the d r i v i n g a n d d r i v e n m e m b e r s in c o n ta c t w i t h e a c h

k n o w n as the p re ss u r e p la te. It is fitted i n to a steel co v e r,

w h i c h a lso c o n t a in s s o m e o f the o p e r a t i n g m e m b e r s , a n d

is b o lt e d to the f l y w h e e l .

T h e d r i v e n m e m b e r is the c lu tch disc w ith a s p lin e d

h u b w h i c h is f r e e to s lid e l e n g t h w i s e a l o n g the sp lin e s o f

the c lu tch s h a ft , but w h i c h d r i v e s the s h a f t t h r o u g h these

s a m e sp lin e s. G r o o v e s o n b o t h sid e s o f the c lu tch d isc

l i n i n g p r e v e n t s t i c k i n g o f the p l a t e to the fly w h e e l a n d

p re s s u r e p la te. S u i t a b l e f r i c t i o n a l f a c i n g s a r e a t t a c h e d to

e a c h s i d e o f the c lu t c h d isc b y m e a n s o f bra ss rivets.

g r a d u a l l y as the w a v e d s p r in g s flatten out.

T h e c lu tch d isc is p r o v i d e d w i t h a fl e x i b l e c e n t e r to

a b s o r b the t o r s i o n a l v i b r a t i o n o f the c r a n k s h a f t w h i c h

w o u l d be t r a n s m it t e d to the p o w e r tra in unless it w e r e

e l i m i n a t e d . T h e f l e x i b l e c e n t e r t a k e s the f o r m o f steel

c o m p r e s s i o n s p r i n g s p l a c e d b e t w e e n the h u b a n d the

stee l p l a t e . T h e s p r in g s p e r m i t the d isc to ro t a te s lig h t ly

w i t h r e l a t i o n to its h u b u ntil the s p r in g s a r e c o m p r e s s e d

a n d r e l a t i v e m o t i o n stops. T h e n the d isc c a n rota te

s l ig h t l y b a c k w a r d as the s p r i n g s d e c o m p r e s s . T h i s slig h t

b a c k w a r d a n d f o r w a r d r o t a t i o n p e r m i t t e d b y the s p r in g s

a llo w s the c lu t c h s h a f t to r o t a te at a m o r e u n i f o r m ra te

t h a n th e c r a n k s h a f t , t h e r e b y e l i m i n a t i n g s o m e o f the
