LUBRICATION 0-18
Relay Valve
Once a year check valve, clean or replace parts.
HYDROVAC AND AIR OVER
HYDRAULIC BRAKES
The air over hydraulic (Multi-Pak) piston type assem
blies are equipped with lubrication plugs in the closed
end of the shell approximately 1" from the bottom of the
cylinder. F ill to plug level with Bendix Vacuum Cylinder
Oil or Delco shock absorber fluid at 12,000 mile intervals
or each six month period, especially prior to the start
of cold weather.
The Hydrovac assemblies are the diaphragm type.
CA U TIO N :
These units do not require lubrica
tion. Do not add oil of any type to diaphragm
chamber.
Trucks equipped with power brakes utilize engine
vacuum to reduce the braking effort to much less than
is required with regular brakes. A built-in vacuum
reserve will supply two or more power assisted brake
applications after the engine has stopped. After the
vacuum reserve has been exhausted, the vehicle can be
stopped utilizing the manual portion of the power brake
system although considerably more foot pressure will
be needed to stop the vehicle.
Vacuum brake air cleaner for frame mounted vacuum
boosters should be cleaned semi-annually.
SUSPENSION
10-30 SERIES
Front
Maintain correct front end alignment to provide easy
steering, longer tire life, and driving stability.
Independent Front Suspension
Check control arm bushings and ball joints for wear.
Lubricate tie rods, upper and lower control arms,
and ball joints at fittings with water resistant EP
chassis grease which meets General Motors specifi
cation #GM 6031M every 6,000 miles or every 4 months,
whichever occurs first.
NOTE:
Ball joints must be at +10°F. or more
before lubricating.
Rear
Keep spring to axle “ U” bolts and shackle bolts
properly tightened.
Lubricate spring hangers on six cam surfaces with
water resistant EP chassis grease which meets General
Motors Specification #GM 6031M every 6,000 miles or
every 4 months, whichever occurs first.
NOTE:
The 3/4-1 Ton Forward Control models
require lubrication at the front spring pin
fittings every 6,000 miles.
Lubricate front and rear spring shackles at fittings
with water resistant EP chassis grease which meets
General Motors Specification #GM 6031M every 6,000
miles or every 4 months, whichever occurs first.
40-80 SERIES
Front
Maintain correct front end alignment to provide easy
steering, longer tire life, and driving stability.
I Beam
C A U TIO N :
Certain driving conditions such as
dust storms and frequent driving on dusty roads
necessitate more frequent lubrication periods.
Lubricate front suspension, kingpins, tie rod
ends, etc. every 1,000 miles.
Check spring
“ U”
bolts, kingpins, steering tie rods,
and steering arms for alignment and tightness.
Lubricate steering arm, kingpins, and tie rods at
fittings with water resistant EP chassis grease which
meets General Motors Specification #GM 6031M every
6.000 miles or every 4 months, whichever occurs first.
Rear
Keep spring to axle “ U " bolts and shackle bolts
properly tightened. A ll “ U” bolts should be retorqued
to 275-325 ft. lbs. as required.
Lubricate front and rear spring hangers on six cam
surfaces with water resistant EP chassis grease which
meets General Motors Specification #GM 6031M every
6.000 miles or every 4 months, whichever occurs first.
Tandem Suspension
After the first 500 miles of operation torque rod ball
stud nuts should be retorqued to 275-300 ft. lbs. The
spring saddle cap stud nuts should be retorqued to
275-300 ft. lbs. The tandem axle spring hangers must
be lubricated on four cam surfaces and two spring pin
fittings with EP chassis lubricant which meets General
Motors Specification #GM 6031M every 6,000 miles or
every 4 months, whichever occurs first.
STEERING
10-30 SERIES
Check the steering gear to frame bolts regularly to
be certain they are tight. Keep the pitman arm to pitman
shaft nut tight. Keep the housing side and end covers
tight to prevent lubricant loss and prevent steering from
loosening. Seasonal change of this lubricant is unneces
sary and the housing should not be drained.
Every 36,000 miles--check steering gear lubricant
level (Except K10-20 and P20-30).
1. Remove the outboard steering gear cover attaching
screw.
2. Inject water resistant EP chassis grease which
meets General Motors Specification #GM 6031M, into
the screw hole as required.
3. Replace cover attaching screw.
NOTE:
Lubricate intermediate steering shaft
with water resistant EP chassis grease which
meets General Motors Specification #GM 6031M
every 6,000 miles or every 4 months, whichever
occurs first on P-10 models only.
On CA10, 20, 30 models equipped with power steering
check steering gear lubricant in the following manner.
1. Remove the two inboard screws and remove the
power steering hose support bracket. Reinstall top
screw.
2. Remove outboard screw and inject lubricant into
the screw hole as required.
3. Reinstall outboard screw and hose support bracket.
In addition,
check fluid in power steering pump
reservoir—while hot and wheels in full left t ur n
position-make additions using GM Power Steering
