CMT-130TC Book Trimmer
GP 6.15 Principles of Operation
Configuration Options
The CMT-130TC has five possible infeed config-
urations and three possible outfeed configura-
tions.
The infeed options are:
Inline (Tilt Infeed with Elevator)
Pile Feeder
Pile Feeder
Standard Hand Feed Conveyor
Long Hand Feed Conveyor
The outfeed options are:
Vertical Book Stacker
Exit Conveyor
Exit Chute
Sequence of Operations
– Infeed
Option 1: In-line (Tilt Infeed with Elevator)
1. A book is released from the binder and
drops onto the infeed belts of the Tilt Infeed
Conveyor. A diffuse sensor detects that
there is a book on this conveyor, signals to
the computer to drive the book onto the tilted
conveyor.
2. One of three possible retro-reflective sen-
sors on the tilt table detects the book, and
then the tilt table drops to a level condition.
The conveyor on the tilt table drives the
book onto the level conveyor portion of the
tilt conveyor. The book passes over a re-
flector near the end of the conveyor near the
input of the Elevator. When the reflector be-
comes uncovered, the computer knows the
book is completely in the Elevator. Cables
connect power and logic between the trim-
mer and the conveyor. The logic controls
the air valve used to actuate the tilt portion
of the conveyor.
3. The Elevator has a retro-reflective sensor at
the bottom of the Elevator that detects if the
Elevator is empty or not. This signals to the
computer whether or not it is necessary to
lift the shelves to the next position.
4. The Elevator has a retro-reflective sensor at
the top aiming down toward a reflector on
the top shelf. This lets the computer know
whether to push a book off the top shelves
and into the trimmer, or to lift the shelves up
to the next position.
5. A cylinder pushes the book into the ma-
chine. A normally open, micro switch is ac-
tuated by the pusher at its home position.
To protect the machine, the Elevator cannot
increment if the pusher is not home. The
micro switch is wired in series with the inter-
lock switch on the Elevator door. This con-
nection provides power to the Elevator mo-
tor and does not rely on logic to stop the El-
evator from lifting. Logic wiring is run be-
tween an additional switch on each interlock.
This logic data is communicated through the
cable connecting the Elevator and infeed
conveyor. It is communicated to the trimmer
through the cable connected between the
Elevator and the trimmer.
6. The book is pushed across an intermediate
shelf fastened to the left side of the trimmer.
A retro-reflective sensor is mounted above
the shelf, and detects when a book jams and
does not completely evacuate from the Ele-
vator, thereby stopping the trimmer and
showing a jam error on the screen.
7. There is a barcode scanner mounted to the
intermediate shelf that scans barcodes on
book covers as they enter the trimmer. The
information stored in the barcode may con-
tain dimensional data for the book to be
trimmed.
8. The shelf also supports the book as it
crosses the span between the Elevator
shelves and the trimmer.
Option 2: Pile Feeder
1. Books are stacked vertically with the spine
side down on the loading table of the feeder.
The table contains belts and a back stop
that move the pile forward, until a retro-re-
flective sensor detects when a book is ready
to be dropped onto the intermediate tilt ta-
ble.
2. When the Pile Feeder gets the signal from
the computer to send a book to the trimmer,
it drops one book at a time onto the interme-
diate tilt table. A retro-reflective sensor de-
tects when a book is on the intermediate tilt
table, and then the table drops down and
delivers the book to the lower tilt table.
3. One of two possible retro-reflective sensors
on the lower tilt table detects the book, and
then the lower tilt table drops to a level con-
dition. The conveyor on the tilt table drives
the book toward the trimmer.
4. The book moves across an intermediate
shelf fastened to the left side of the trimmer.
A retro-reflective sensor is mounted above
the shelf, and detects when a book jams and
does not completely evacuate from the Pile
Feeder, thereby stopping the trimmer and
showing a jam error on the screen.
5. There is a barcode scanner mounted to the
intermediate shelf that scans barcodes on
book covers as they enter the trimmer. The
information stored in the barcode may con-
tain dimensional data for the book to be
trimmed.
