EQUIPPING THE FILTER
In the box filter, placed in the aquarium, you will insert the heater (if supplied) in its seat and the pump which directs the flow of water,
connecting it with the tube to the exit hole. In this box filter you will have to add filter media, such as filter wool, carbon, ceramic rings,
synthetic fibres etc. In equipping the filter, consider that first the water passes through possible activated carbon, then through the filter
wool/foam and finally through the ceramic rings or other biological filtrations. Add some other foam in the third part before putting the
pump. The filtering system has to be cleaned periodically, taking into consideration some factors such as the quantity of fish and the
delivered food. If you use carbon, you should replace it regularly. For the fibre wool/foam, you should clean under water or replace.
WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE PUMP AND HEATER (IF SUPPLIED) OUT OF WATER, DRY RUNNING WILL CAUSE STRUCTURAL DAMAGE.
PLEASE REFER TO THE SPECIFIC INSTRUCTION BOOKLETS OF THE MANUFACTURER.
Please note: filter media (filter wool, carbon, ceramic rings, synthetic fibres) is NOT included. Ask for advice at your local pet store, in
order to select the proper materials for your aquarium.
GROWING AQUATIC PLANTS
The choice between artificial or living aquatic plants is up to your personal preference. There are plenty of pros and cons for each option. A
well planned and maintained aquarium can be beautiful with either real or artificial plants. If you decide to grow live plants, make sure that
the water is warm enough for them. Plants need warmth to prosper. Heat is provided by the lights and the tank's heating device. Maintain
a steady temperature to reduce stress. In a new tank setup, bring the water to room temperature before planting.
Ask your local aquarium shop for advice, according to the type of plant you wish to grow.
EQUIPPING THE AQUARIUM
Depending on the type of plants and on the kind of fish you wish to keep, you will select the particle size and the type of material of the
gravel. Gravel must be thoroughly washed before being placed into the aquarium, under running water.
Place on the bottom 2/3 cm substrate (in case you wish to grow live waterplants) and add onto this about 5/6 cm gravel in the colours you
like most, taking care to wash it carefully under running water. Sloping the gravel gradually from the back to the front (shallow in front and
deeper at the back) can be a great way to accommodate all plants. Moreover any decaying matter will drift down toward the front of the
tank.
According to the size of the tank, add plants, decorative objects (woods, rocks, amphorae etc. ) wash them carefully with water, without
any detergent.
WARNING: TAKE CARE NOT TO OBSTRUCT THE ENTRY OF WATER IN THE FILTER
FILLING THE TANK
Now you can fill the aquarium with water. When the water level reaches the middle of the aquarium you can place the plants, planting
them, add water letting it slide onto your hand avoiding the uprooting of the plants.
Furthermore in order to prevent the harmful effects of the chlorine present in the water we suggest a bio-conditioner to counteract. Close
the hood of the aquarium and connect the supply plug, let the water circulate for about 10 days , regulating the temperature and the
evaporation of the chlorine.
After this period of acclimatization, take a test tube of water and take it to the appropriate pet shop in order to test the pH. This is the
right place where you can get advice for possible water correctives and for the various fish you could buy for your aquarium.
TRANSFERRING YOUR FISH INTO THE AQUARIUM
Fish are often transported in sealed plastic bags partly filled with water and inflated with oxygen, if the trip home is long. There are several
steps that you can take to help insure your fish's health. When you get home with the fish, turn off the lights of your aquarium, leave the
bag floating in the water for at least 10 minutes. After the bag has been floating in the tank and the water temperature has stabilized,
acclimating the new fish to the tank's temperature, you are ready for the next step. Carefully open the bag and scoop an equal amount of
water from the tank into the bag. There should now be about twice as much water in the bag as the pet store gave you. Let the bag float in
the tank for another fifteen minutes. Now you are ready to release them. Remember to prevent the store’s water from getting into your
tank. Carefully net the fish out of the bag one at a time and place them gently into the water of your aquarium. Leave the lights off for at
least another hour.
