8 Chain drive
A Carqon with chain drive, combined with a Shimano Deore XT derailleur gear system, is a traditional
chain drive. The gear shift can be found on the drive side (chain side) on the rear wheel.

8.1 Handling the chain drive
● At least twice a year, the derailleur and chain need to be lubricated. Please contact a Carqon
dealer for this maintenance.

Check all of the components on the derailleur gears for damage.

Carry out a visual inspection on the gear cable and check the casing of the gear cables and the
wires for damage or cracks.
● Check the function of the derailleur gears in the following way:
• Lift the cargo bike by the frame in such a way that the rear wheel can move freely.
• Set the rear wheel in motion with the help of the pedals.
• Shift through all of the gears.
• Check whether you are able to shift through all of the gears properly. Ensure that there are no
unusual noises when shifting gears.
8.2 Checking the chain drive
Have the sprocket and/or the chainwheel replaced by a Carqon dealer if you notice that individual
teeth are dangerously sharp (so-called shark teeth) (1) or (2).
● Contact a Carqon dealer if components show signs of damage, if you notice unusual sounds
when shifting gears or if you are unable to shift through all of the gears in a proper manner.
