Chapter 4: Feature Description
Ethernet Features
Note
EFM is planned for a future release.
From the operator’s point of view, Link OAM helps to establish and maintain networks that are
more resilient and more profitable. This is because the 802.3ah protocol minimizes OPEX, first by
reducing maintenance costs, and second by maximizing profits through the optimization and
documentation of network performance, enabling operators to maintain strict SLAs with
customers. In addition 802.3ah enables operators to gain new revenue by servicing a growing
market for carrier-class EFM.
Link OAM offers visibility into the Ethernet links between adjacent NEs. The following Link OAM
capabilities enable operators to eliminate truck rolls and benefit from OPEX savings:
•
Discovery – The ability for OAM-enabled devices to discover each other and notify each other
of their capabilities.
•
Link Monitoring – The ability to monitor link attributes and status information such as errors
and events (symbols, frames).
•
Remote Fault Detection – The ability to detect and handle link failure, and the ability for OAM-
enabled devices to convey failure condition information to their peers.
•
Remote Loopback – The ability to test segments and links by sending test pattern frames
through them and validate connectivity.
•
MIB Variable Retrieval – The ability to retrieve information from a management information
base (MIB).
