2.4
If the heater is used on a horizontal drum the liquid
must be of low viscosity and, as with vertical drums, must
be non-volatile.
2.4.1
To ensure that the terminals do not overheat,
position the heater so that the terminal box remains on
the side of the drum, not at the top or bottom.
Note: Painted drums may show signs of singeing at the
point of heater contact.
3.0 START UP AND OPERATION
3.1
After clamping to the vessel, plug in the heater. Do
not allow the power cord to come in contact with the heater
surface.
3.2
Adjust the thermostat to the desired setting. The
adjustable surface temperature sensing thermostat has
a 120° to 180°F (50° to 82°C) range. This control is not
intended for close temperature regulation.
4.0 MAINTENANCE
The DHF drum heater is constructed to operate in tough
industrial applications with a minimum of maintenance.
However some routine maintenance is recommended
to extend the life of the heater and its components.
ALWAYS UNPLUG THE HEATER BEFORE PERFORMING
ANY MAINTENANCE.
4.1
Keep the heater element assembly clean for
improved heat transfer.
4.2
Open the terminal enclosure to inspect for
cleanliness and dampness. Check all electrical
connections and tighten if necessary. Under normal
operating conditions yearly maintenance should be
sufficient.

INSTALLATION, OPERATING & MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
FOR DHF DRUM HEATERS
The DHF drum heater is designed specifically for heating
the contents of a standard 45 gallon (55 U.S. gallon)
drum having a 22 1/2" (572mm) diameter. The heater is
intended primarily for use on vertically positioned drums
containing low or medium viscosity liquids.
Despite its versatility caution must be employed in its
use in that the DHF heater may have an operating surface
temperature of up to 600°F (315°C). For this reason we
suggest an insulation cover be placed over the heater to
protect personnel and to improve efficiency.
(Note: Insulation must not cover the terminal box).
The DHF drum heater is NOT suitable:
i)
for heating highly volatile liquids
ii)
for heating closed containers
iii)
for operation in hazardous environments
1.0 INITIAL INSPECTION
1.1
Upon receipt from the carrier, inspect the heater for
possible damage in transit. If necessary, immediately
report damage to the shipping company.
1.2
Verify that the nameplate voltage, wattage and
catalog number comply with the order.
Do not connect the DHF drum heater to an electrical supply
voltage other than that shown on the product nameplate.
2.0 INSTALLATION
2.1
Install the heater around the bottom section of the
drum to improve heat transfer.
2.2
The springs are intended to tighten the heater over
the drum while taking up any slack due to thermal
expansion. Adjust tension by tightening the hex nuts
located on the clamping bracket.
2.3
The electrical receptacle must match the plug
configuration (see below).
