Step 7: Breathing Circuit Characterization Test
To perform the Breathing Circuit Characterization test:
a. Select the Breathing Circuit Characterization Test button on the Home screen.
b. When the Breathing Circuit Characterization Test prompt appears, follow the onscreen
instructions. Ensure the breathing circuit is properly connected.

c. Tap Start .
The CAE Air1 initiates ventilation (e.g. Pressure Support mode with default settings) on a
test lung.
d. Block the breathing circuit by inserting a plug into the patient connection port of the y-
junction.
e. Depending on the degree of occlusion, the Plimit threshold will be reached immediately
sending the ventilator into Pressure Safe mode OR the Ppeak High alarm threshold will
be reached and, after three respiratory cycles, the ventilator will go into Pressure Safe
mode.
f. In Pressure Safe mode, the Breathing Circuit Obstruction Alarm will trigger as a suspected
cause for the pressure increase event.
g. In Pressure Safe mode, the electronically controlled pressure relief valve will open;
dropping the circuit pressure to atmospheric levels. After 1 second, ventilation will
attempt to resume.
When the test is complete, the test result screen is displayed.
