Chapter 2. Installation
Mounting Requirements
Bullhorn units that include either an anodized aluminum or NEMA-rated enclosure can be
mounted anywhere with a few precautions. The following list identifies certain conditions to
consider when choosing a location to mount the unit. Mounting hardware suitable for the type of
mounting surface is provided by the customer. For unit dimensions, refer to the figure on the next
page.
1.
Anodized Aluminum Enclosure:
For the SDT16-GSM (Figure 2-1):
a.
Choose an area that is clear of metal structures that may cause radio signal interference.
b.
Install the unit in an area that provides enough working space to perform routine
maintenance, such as changing the battery or configuring the unit for service.
c.
The installation area should provide a minimum RSSI of –88dB or better.
Units that use the GSM, digital cellular network will attempt to transmit at RSSI levels
down to –105dB. Operation may be sporadic in this range. Local environmental
conditions such as weather, physical obstructions, and the amount of ambient radio
frequency interference can have a more pronounced effect when the RSSI is between –
88dB and –105dB. If you encounter transmission difficulties as a result of these
conditions, you may need to install a high gain directional antenna, which is available
from American Innovations. Contact Technical Support for additional information.

2.
NEMA-rated Enclosure:
For SDT16-ORB and SDT16-SAT (Figure 2-1):
a.
Mount the unit in a clear, unobstructed area. The area should also provide enough
working space to easily open the enclosure when performing routine maintenance or
configuring the unit for service.
b.
For the SDT16-GSM, the installation area should provide a minimum RSSI of –
88db or better as described earlier in this section.
c.
For units that use the ORBCOMM satellite network, the externally mounted antenna
must be installed at least two (2) feet above the solar panel and face in the same
direction as the nearest ORBCOMM GES as described in
d.
To allow for quicker communications with the satellite, begin the installation with the
next section if you are working with a unit that uses the ORBCOMM or SkyWave-
Inmarsat satellite network.
