
20. Return the system to the operating position as described in “Returning the 296/C3 to the Operating
Position” on page 7 or “Placing the 296/E3 into the Service and Operating Position” on page 7.
21. On a 296/C3, close the rear rack door.
22. Start the system as described in “Starting the System” on page 8.
Replacing or Installing a Non-Hot-Pluggable PCI Adapter
To replace or install an non-hot-pluggable adapter, do the following:
1. Stop the system as described in “Stopping the System” on page 9.
2. Place the system into the service position as described in “Placing the 296/C3 into the Service
Position” on page 6 or “Placing the 296/E3 into the Service and Operating Position” on page 7.
3. On a 296/C3, open the rear rack door.
4. Disconnect the power source to the system.
Note: This system may be equipped with a second power supply. Before continuing with this
procedure, ensure that the system has been completely disconnected from its power source.
5. Remove the service access cover as described in “Removing the 296/C3 Service Access Cover” on
page 12 or “Removing the 296/E3 Service Access Cover” on page 13.
6. Refer to the
PCI Adapter Placement Reference
, order number SA23-2504, for information regarding
slot restrictions for adapters that can be used in this system.
7. If necessary, remove the adapter expansion slot shield.
8. Before handling any card, board, or memory DIMM, refer to “Handling Static-Sensitive Devices” on
9. If necessary, remove the adapter from the antistatic package.
Attention: Avoid touching the components and gold-edge connectors on the adapter.
10. Place the adapter, component-side up, on a flat, static-protective surface.
11. Set any jumpers or switches as instructed by the adapter’s manufacturer.
12. Carefully grasp the adapter by its top edge, and align the adapter with the expansion slot and its
connector on the system backplane.
13. Press the adapter
firmly
into its connector.
Attention: When you install an adapter into the system, be sure that it is completely and correctly
seated in its connector.
14. If you are replacing or installing a short adapter, continue to the next step.
If you are replacing or installing a long adapter, do the following:
a. Close and latch the PCI adapter light-pipe plate attached to the fan tray.
b. Note the guide grooves located toward the front of the system in the disk drive backplane, and
align the adapter properly.
