NOTE: Due to dust accu m ulation, rewind starter
m ust be periodically cleaned, inspected and relu-
bricated.
CAUTION: It is of the ut m ost i m porta n ce that
the rewi n d starter spri n g be lubricated period-
ically usi n g Molykote PG 54 (P/N 420 8 99 763).
Otherwise, rewi n d starter co m po n e n t life will
be shorte n ed a n d/or rewi n d starter will n ot op-
erate properly u n der very cold te m peratures.
Check if rope n o. 1 is fraying, replace if so.
W hen pulling starter grip, m echanis m m ust en-
gage within 30 c m (1 ft) of rope pulled. If not, dis-
asse m ble rewind starter, clean and check for da m -
aged plastic parts. Replace as required, lubricate,
reasse
m ble and recheck. Always replace O-ring
n o. 2 every ti m e rewind starter is disasse m ble.
W hen releasing starter grip, it m ust return to its
stopper and stay against it. If not, check for proper
spring preload or da
m ages. Readjust or replace as
required.
W hen pulling starter grip 10 ti m es in a row, it m ust
return freely. If not, check for da m aged parts or
lack of lubrication. Replace parts or lubricate ac-
cordingly.
REMOVAL
Using a s m all screwdriver, extract rope knot fro m
starter grip. Cut rope close to knot. T ie a knot
near starter.
Re m ove screws n o. 3 securing rewind starter
housing n o. 4 to engine then re m ove rewind
starter.
ROPE REPLACEMENT
Pull out rope. Hold rewind starter in a vise. Slide
rope and untie the knot. Pull out the rope co
m -
pletely.

NOTE: W hen rope is co m pletely pulled out, spring
preload is 4-1/2 turns.
DI S A SS EMBLY
Undo knot previously tied at re m oval. Carefully let
sheave unwind to release spring preload.
Re m ove push nut n o. 5 and discard. Re m ove
locking ele m ent n o. 6 , O-ring n o. 2 , step collar
n o. 7 , pawl lock n o. 8 and pawl n o. 9 .
Re m ove sheave n o. 10 fro m rewind starter hous-
ing n o. 4 . Hold spring with a screwdriver.
