Z-touch Laser Beams
About the Laser Beams
The
Z-touch
laser pointer emits two kinds of laser beams that are activated by the graduated
laser beam switch:
Laser Beam
Explanation
Visible laser beam
Appears as a red point for planning and guidance (activated by the
first level of the switch)
Infrared laser beam
Detected by the camera and used for acquiring registration points
(activated by the second level of the switch)
NOTE: Do not use Z-touch if the visible red guide laser is not working or not seen when pressing
the laser beam switch and while the control LED is simultaneously signaling proper functioning. If
this occurs, contact Brainlab immediately for advice on how to proceed.
Requirements for Laser Beams
So that the infrared laser beam can be emitted:
• The camera must have unobstructed view of infrared sensor
• The
Z-touch
registration dialog must be opened
Plan the OR setup prior to surgery. The camera must have an unobstructed view of the
reflective marker spheres of the patient reference array and infrared sensor of the Z-touch.
How to Use Z-touch
Step
1.
To activate the visible laser, press the activation button.
The visible laser is activated immediately.
2.
The infrared laser beam is activated with a one-second delay to the visible laser, when
the following are fulfilled:
• The
Z-touch
registration dialog is open in the navigation software.
• The activation button is pressed.
• The infrared sensor detects the camera.
3.
The laser beams are deactivated when the activation button is released or after 60 sec-
onds of continuous operation.
Safety Considerations for Laser Devices
Warning
Never look or stare directly into laser beam. Do not direct laser beam into eyes.
Warning
Before beginning registration, you must close the patient’s eyes. Do not point laser beam
into the eyes of a narcotized patient.
When used in combination with a Brainlab navigation system, Z-touch is a Class 3R laser
device according to IEC 60825-1:2014. This should be communicated to your laser safety
officer. Different national laser safety requirements may apply. If additional safety
measures for use are provided those instructions must be followed and take precedence
over these provided by Brainlab. (The emission of the visible laser on its own without
