After a few seconds, BAT 115 shows the evaluation
of the vehicle battery (text and colored with green,
orange and red), the measured voltage, the determined
cold start capability and the internal resistance of the
vehicle battery.

A surface charge occurs on charged batteries and
influences the result of measurement. Therefore,
the "
SURFACE CHARGE
" (surface tension) message
is normal for battery tests on vehicles that have
recently been moved and therefore still have a
relatively high battery voltage. Please note the
corresponding query.

GOOD & PASS
Battery okay, battery does not need
charging.
GOOD & RECHARGE Charge battery.
RECHARGE RETEST Fully charge the battery and retest.
Failure to fully charge a new battery
before testing may cause false readings. If
RECHARGE RETEST appears again after
you fully charge the battery, replace the
battery.
MARGINAL BATTERY Replace battery immediately or soon.
BAD & REPLACE
Replace battery and retest. A
BAD & REPLACE result may also mean
a poor connection between the clamps
and the battery. After disconnecting the
clamps, retest the battery using the out-
of-vehicle test before replacing it.
5.5
System test
The following characteristics are evaluated during
the system test for 12 V and 24 V starter/generator
systems:

Voltage dips during the starting process
R
Harmonic content of the charging voltage without
load
R
Charging voltage under load

Before starting the system test, inspect the
alternator drive belt. A belt that is glazed or worn,
or lacks the proper tension, will prevent the
alternator from achieving the rpm levels needed for
the test.

The performance of the starting and charging
systems depends on the battery’s condition. It is
important that the battery is good and charged
before a system test is performed.
i
Before the engine is started, switch off all vehicle
consumers (e.g. lights, air conditioning, radio).
i
To measure the charging voltage under load, switch
on consumers such as high beam and rear window
heater. Do not switch on cyclic loads such as air
conditioning or windscreen wipers.
i
If you test older diesel engines, accelerate the
engine to 2500 rpm for 15 seconds.
