Surface Sampling Device
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The LIGHTNING MVP ICON Surface Sampling Device is a
self-contained device for use with the LIGHTNING MVP
ICON™ or LIGHTNING
MVP
®
systems for quality and
HACCP-related monitoring of the environment. The MVP
ICON and LIGHTNING MVP systems detect food and
microbiological residues by measuring Adenosine
triphosphate (ATP) using luciferase bioluminescence. ATP is
found in most food residues and all bacteria, yeast and mold
cells.
Part No. 64003-100 (100 tests)
KIT COMPONENTS
One box of 100 surface sampling devices
IMPORTANT USAGE GUIDELINES
Do not insert wet or contaminated sampling devices into the
instrument. Wipe condensate from exterior of device before
use with a clean, lint-free cloth. Avoid handling the device
with wet or contaminated hands.
Always remove sampling devices from instrument after
reading.
Do not store the MVP ICON or MVP instrument on its side
or back. Avoid storing in humid areas where water leaks are
possible.
TEST PROCEDURE
A. Collecting Sample
(a)
Twist to remove sampling device from body tube. The
swab tip must be moist. If fully saturated, any excess
wetting agent should be blotted off by gently pressing the
swab tip against the interior of the body tube. Be careful
not to touch the swab or inside the sampling device with
fingers.
(b)
Thoroughly swab a standard 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) area of
interest for a typical flat surface. For irregularly shaped
surfaces, ensure swabbing technique remains consistent
each time you swab. Reinsert the swab into the body
tube using a twisting motion to ensure it is sealed.
Note:
After swabbing, the sampling device is stable for one
hour prior to activation.
B. Activating Device and Reading Results
(a)
To activate the sampling device, hold upright and push
the plunger down until it is fully depressed. The reagents
will be dispensed through the sampling device washing
the sample off the swab tip and into the collection tube.
(b) Insert the sampling device into the MVP ICON or MVP
and read the results. When inserting into the MVP
ICON, ensure the flat sides of the sampling device base
chamber face left-to-right in the instrument.
Note:
Results should be read within two minutes of
activation. Please refer to the MVP ICON User Guide or
MVP System Guide for operating instructions.
INTREPRETING RESULTS
(a)
When using default thresholds in the MVP ICON or MVP
systems, readings of 2.5 Zones or less indicate the
surface is considered clean.
(b)
Readings between 2.6 - 3.0 Zones indicate a warning the
surface is not adequately clean.
(c)
If the reading is greater than 3.0 Zones, the surface is
considered dirty and should be re-cleaned and re-tested.
CONTROLS
A.
Positive Control
It is recommended LIGHTNING MVP ICON ATP Positive
Controls (Part No. 64001-25) be run every other day to
verify integrity of the reagent system.
(a)
A positive control should yield a result from 3.1 to 4.3
Zones. See ATP Positive Control Directions for Use for
additional information.
B.
Negative Control
A negative control is an unused yet activated LIGHTNING
MVP ICON Surface Sampling Device.
(a)
Negative control results should read between 1.0 to 2.5
Zones.
(b)
Readings above 2.5 may indicate contamination of the
MVP ICON or MVP sampling chamber or sampling
device.
See ATP Positive Control Directions for Use for additional
information. Contact BioControl Technical Support at
800.245.0113 for more information.
PRECAUTIONS
The appearance of a yellow band on the swab tip is normal
and will not affect performance.
If accidental activation prior to sampling occurs, do not use
device.
Hold sampling device upright when activating.
Read sampling device within two minutes of activation.
When reading the sampling device, the MVP ICON or MVP
must be kept upright (no greater than 45° angle). See MVP
ICON User Guide or MVP System Guide for additional
information.
STORAGE
Sampling devices should be stored at a temperature between
2 ºC – 30 ºC (36
˚
F – 86 ºF). Protect from direct sunlight.
Unused devices must be resealed in the foil bags.
