11. Setting the sails
For the first time, we suggest hoisting of the sails on the land, at least setting of the jib and gennaker.
You will have better access all around the boat, a better understanding of the systems and you'll not
lose any parts in the water.
For safe setting the sails on the land the wind should not exceed 10 knots in gusts, and you need to
turn the boat head to wind, ideally about 15-20 degrees starboard. These should also be enough
room around the boat, especially when setting the gennaker, which will fly on the side of the boat.
11.1. Setting the JIB
Jib halyard on First 18 is continuous and hidden into the zip pocket on the leading edge of the jib.
Both ends of the halyard are fixed on the jib head and extra rope pulled into the zip pocket.
Free and unwind both ends of the jib halyard off the forestay. Identify the end of the jib halyard on
the inside of the swivel on the top and make sure it's not tangled.
Tie the jib halyard on the jib head attachment ring with half-hitch secured with a double overhand
knot.
