15.2 Preparing Slides for Processing
For slides to be successfully processed on the BD FocalPoint™ Slide Profiler, they must meet
specific physical standards as described in Section 13. Additionally, each slide must also
undergo certain cleaning procedures and have a properly applied BD-approved barcode label.
The following topics describe the procedures for applying labels and cleaning slides.
15.2.1
Applying Barcode Labels
Each slide must have a BD FocalPoint™ Slide Profiler compatible barcode label affixed to the
frosted end of the slide. The label must be placed on the same side of the slide as the specimen
and coverslip and must be readable by both humans and machines.
Always use BD FocalPoint™ Slide Profiler compatible barcode labels.
To apply a barcode label to a slide:
If an underlying label, such as the accession or specimen number, needs to be preserved start
with Step 1; otherwise, start with Step 2.
1
To preserve an underlying label, such as the accession or specimen number, place
cellophane tape over the label before applying the barcode label to the slide.
Do not allow the tape to touch the coverslip or wrap over the edges of the slide.
2
With the tape in place, apply the barcode label on top of the tape on the same side of the
slide as the specimen and coverslip. Position the barcode label as close to the narrow edge
of the slide as possible without extending beyond the edge of the slide. Make sure the label
does not go on top of the coverslip. Refer to Section 13.2 for exact placement dimensions.
3
When loading the slides into trays, be sure to follow the steps in Section 15.3.
