Distributed video
Distributed video enables the display of large video windows at full frame rate that are freely movable over the
whole desktop, especially if multiple PCI segments are used to built the display wall. Distributed video can be

Video data at a given color depth and frame rate results in a maximal number of projection modules that can be
fed from one PCI bus segment because of PCI bus bandwidth limitations. With the distributed video feature of E
OS
this bandwidth limitation can be overcame by composing the display wall from groups of projection modules,
each fed by one PCI bus segment, which is capable to provide the required bandwidth for one group.
In contrast to standard display of video (a video source is fixed to a video input of an input card) with distributed
video one video source is related to a video window. This window is displayed by a group of video input cards,
located in those PCI segments, where a video of the group shall possibly be moved to. Depending on the location
of the video window the video input card of the respective PCI segment displays the video data. If the window is
moved over the borders of the PCI segment the video signal is sent to the video input card of this new segment
and the connected video switcher provides the video input card of the new PCI segment with the actual video
data. By this no video data has to cross PCI bus segment boundaries. One group of distributed video can display
as many videos at one time as PCI segments are involved.
If moving a window into a PCI segment where already a video is displayed by this group, then the input card
gets the data of the newly moved video and the first window appears in the background color.
Several groups of distributed video can be installed. One group may only contain video inputs of one type of
input cards.
Distributed video is configured by means of the switcher definition file; please refer to section

Distributed Video: two video windows in one PCI segment
result in displaying the background color for one video window
The example above shows a simplified E
OS
configuration in order to explain the principles of distributed video
and to avoid complexity at the same time.
