Building Instructions
The Astoria-Megler Bridge is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. It is an
icon of the Southern Washington coast and the mid span is in Oregon. To keep the model at
a reasonable size, it depicts only this impressive mid span. When you finish building the
model, look up the roadway and compare it with how it looks in real life when you drive up
the road, you will be surprised!
The kit you are about to build was designed and printed in Washington State, inspired by
the area of our home on the Long Island Peninsula in Ocean Park. I am personally really
scared going over the bridge, so I tried to conquer that fear by learning more about it and
designing this model.
Please follow these instructions and I hope you will have fun building and displaying the
model. The kit is precision laser cut with tight tolerances and it fits together very well. I
am using Gorilla Super Glue with the precision tip to put it together. It only requires tiny
drops of glue to assemble (less glue is better!), take your time and you will have a lot of
fun!
I recommend building the bridge from the base up. As you lay out the pieces, please note
that there is one side that is up and one that is down. The side that has a rustier, burned
look is up. All rotations in the instructions are meant to be looking at the side that is up.
The large side bridge pieces are designed so the upper side faces out to get the rusty look
from both sides (the are in fact printed mirrored).
You will find the end result to be quite sturdy and structural sound, however before you
put it together, be aware the small pieces are a choking hazard for small children.
I had a six-year-old neighbor build a bridge model with his parents and the had a blast!
