Installing the Avaya S8700 Media Server with an Avaya G650 Media Gateway
December 2003
Connecting duplication cables
How you connect the duplication cables depends on whether the media servers are installed in the same
room or in separate locations. The S8700 Media Servers can be located up to 6 miles (10 kilometers)
apart.
Collocated media servers
Connect the crossover CAT5 cable and fiber optic cable between the 2 media servers. For a connectivity
guide, see
Getting Started with the Avaya S8700 Media Server with an Avaya G650 Media Gateway
.
Separated media servers
When S8700 media servers are located greater than 100 meters but less than 10 kilometers apart they are
considered to be separated. The connectivity for this arrangement will be custom engineered. For an
overview of separated servers and Center Stage Switch, please see the job aid entitled
Server and CSS
Separation—Avaya S8700 Media Server
.
Configuring a second media server
Both media servers come with a blank hard drive and a bootable CD-ROM with Red Hat Linux 8.0
operating system and Release 2.0 of Communication Manager on it.
The procedure for installing the software on a new media server requires that you format the blank hard
drive using a CD that contains the operating system and release 2.0 of Avaya Communication Manager.
This installation also requires the license and Avaya authentication files.
The procedures for this installation are in
Configuring the media server
on page 34.
Connecting UPS Ethernet cables to an Ethernet switch
Connect the CAT5 straight-through cables from the UPSs’ SNMP modules to the next available port on
the customer’s network. Make sure you are plugged into the correct port on the SNMP module. Check the
documentation that comes with the SNMP module.
