Inspecting Before Grinding
Perform the following checks with the engine running,
but before loading material into the hopper:
•
Check all machine guards and protective devices
for placement and condition.
•
Ensure that everyone is well away from the
machine and that no unauthorized personnel are in
the operating area.
•
Inspect the conveyor belt for rubbing on the frame,
which causes the belt to wear out too soon. Refer to
Section 6000 “Discharge System” in your
6710D
Maintenance Manual.
•
Check hydraulic clutch conditions, including fluid
level in the clutch oil tank. The clutch is operating
properly if the engine is running, the clutch is
engaged, and no clutch errors are appear on the
Peterson display screen.
•
Ensure that the temperature, the pressure, and the
level of hydraulic oil in the tank are within operat-
ing limits. The gauge must show tank pressure in
the normal range of 0 to 5 psi (0 to 0.34 bar).
•
Check engine conditions, including rpm, fluid
leaks, and air leaks, without a load.
•
Ensure that the engine coolant temperature reaches
140°F (60°C) before operating the machine at full
load.
•
Check the pressure gauge on the air manifold for the
desired air bag pressure for your operating condi-
tions. For more information, see “Inflating the IRS
Air Bags” on page 69.
Controlling the Grinder
Although automatic features control many machine
functions, an operator must always be ready to start,
stop, or respond to unique conditions that may arise.
Controlling the grinder requires understanding the fol-
lowing:
•
Reversing the feed system
•
Operating the compression roll
Reversing the Feed System
The feed system reversing function can occur automat-
ically or by manually controlling it.
Reversing the Feed System Manually
To reverse the feed chain
and
the
compression roll:
On either the remote transmitter or control panel,
press the
FEED
reverse button.
To reverse the compression roll only:
Press
ROLL
REVERSE
on the remote transmitter.
Automatic Feed System Reversal
Any one of the following conditions can cause the feed
chain and compression roll to stop and reverse automat-
ically.
•
Hydraulic pressure becomes too high.
•
Engine speed becomes too low.
•
The compression roll rises too high.
When the condition returns to normal, the feed system
returns to the normal, forward direction.
Operating the Compression Roll
You can allow the control system to regulate compres-
sion roll height and down-pressure. Or, you can manu-
ally control the compression roll height and down-
pressure. For most conditions, it is best to allow the
Peterson Adaptive Control System to control the feed
system.
