Appendix B  Reference Information

To reduce the effects of low-frequency noise conditions like those found 
outdoors we recommend taking multiple spectra with spectrum averaging set 
to 10-25, then further average those spectra in post-processing using the 
ViewSpec program. ViewSpec also permits viewing large groups of files.

B.8

Temperature Effects

The FieldSpec spectroradiometer instruments have thermo-electrically cooled 
SWIR detectors (to -25 C), significantly reducing noise in those areas. 

If the FieldSpec spectroradiometer is exposed to direct sunlight, depending on 
the intensity of the sunlight, the effective operating period may be shortened.

When the system fails due to extreme temperature, it will fail gradually but 
the data won't make perfect sense. Shut down and let the instrument cool 
before operating again.

You may also see the FieldSpec spectroradiometer saturate in the SWIR 2 
region if the instrument is still coming to equilibrium from a cooler 
environment to a warmer environment. Frequent re-optimizations will address 
this problem until the instrument comes to equilibrium.

The ASD applications provide a warning when the SWIR detectors are out of 
thermal regulation.
