If auto-negotiation is enabled, a network card can independently
determine the correct transmission speed and duplex setting for
the network port to which it is connected and can then configure
itself accordingly.
In the case of Ethernet, autonegotiation is based on Layer 1 of the
OSI Model (in accordance with the IEEE 802.3u standard).
