6. Check for shorted positive (+) and negative (–) speaker connections.
7. If the preamplifier is working properly, the power light is on, and there is
still no output from one or more channels, the likelihood is that there is
a blown internal fuse. Contact the dealer from whom you purchased the
amplifier, as they should be able to check and change the fuse for you.
Do not attempt to change this fuse yourself: Unauthorized repairs will
void your warranty.
Amplifier Hum
The 3000 Series amplifiers utilize a large toroidal transformer, so some
physical hum can be expected. A hum that is heard when you step away from
the amplifier could be considered unusual, but does not necessarily indicate a
problem with the amplifier. Contact your dealer if you have any concerns about
amplifier hum. Hooking the amplifier up at the dealer’s store and comparing it
with the floor model is a good way to verify whether or not what you are
experiencing is normal.
1. Plug the amplifier into different outlets (different circuits) in the house to see
if it exhibits the same hum.
2. Check for the presence of halogen or other low voltage, or fluorescent
lighting connected to the same circuit. These devices can release noise on
the A/C line that may cause the transformer to resonate, resulting in hum.
3. An intermittent physical hum can generally be attributed to an external
source connected to the same A/C power.
Loudspeaker Hum
In most systems, it is normal to hear some quiet noise when your ear is placed
close to the loudspeaker. It is not normal to hear a loud hum when you step
away; this is usually an indication of a ground loop. If you suspect your system
is exhibiting a ground loop, contact your dealer for recommendations. Follow
the steps below to help determine the source of loudspeaker hum:
1. Power the system down and wait a minute or two for the power supply to
drain. Remove the preamp connections from the amplifier and power the
amp back up. If there is no noise, the problem is not with the amplifier, but
may be system-related.
2. Again power down the amplifier. Reconnect the preamplifier and disconnect
ALL audio and video sources. Power up the preamp and amp. If the hum
returns, it is either coming from the preamplifier, or is the result of a ground
loop between the preamp and amplifier. Ensure that both pieces are
plugged into the same A/C outlet. All your audio and video equipment
should be connected to the same circuit, to make sure that they utilize the
same ground.
3. With the system powered down, connect each source component one by
one, and power the system back up. Source components such as a satellite
receiver, cable box, tuner, or other device connected to an antenna outside
the house can cause a ground loop between the audio system’s ground and
the ground for the external connection. Your Aragon dealer can offer
suggestions for eliminating a ground loop. The Mondial Designs Magic Box
may also solve this problem: It is available at www.mondialdesigns.com
