Integrating a brake chopper [BR+/-] with VECTOPOWER VP5000-
DC/DC200-HL
The VECTOPOWER VP5000-DC/DC200-HL is equipped with a chopper-IGBT [BR+/-] for setting up
a brake chopper.
Install a brake resistor
Install an external braking resistor with sufficient power so that it can permanently carry the full
current in the worst case.
The braking resistor heats up during operation. Touching it may cause burns. Objects in the
vicinity may also be damaged. Ensure that accidental contact is not possible during operation and
that sufficient distance to adjacent components is maintained.
The external braking resistor can heat up so much in the event of an overload that it is destroyed.
The function of the brake chopper [BR+/-] is coupled to the enable for the VECTOPOWER
The brake chopper and the VECTOPOWER fulfill their functions as long as an enable is given from
the hardware.
The following is required for a hardware enable:
- [ST1] pin 1 and pin 2: The supply voltage is present.
- [ST1] pin 3: The enable signal is transmitted.
The brake chopper and the VECTOPOWER are inactive if no enable comes from the hardware. In
this case, neither the brake chopper nor the VECTOPOWER can reduce any excess energy in the
DC link [DC+/-].
Provide protection against destruction
If it is not possible or desirable for the braking resistor to carry the full current permanently, a
circuit must be installed to protect the braking resistor. For example, a thermoswitch or a
temperature sensor should be used that activates a switch-off when the permissible temperature
is exceeded.
Provide measures in case the brake chopper fails
If the braking resistor fails or the enable from the hardware side is missing, the excess energy
leads to a voltage rise in the DC link [DC+/-].
Plan suitable measures for this type of operation.
Example: In a system in which a generator generates energy, switching off the generator can be a
suitable measure.
