7.3. Backing up an X.21 Connection Using ISDN
When the WorldCast Equinox is configured for a primary X.21 connection and a secondary backup ISDN con-
nection any break in the primary audio data will force the codecs to establish a connection on the backup ISDN
link.
The WorldCast Equinox units are configured as follows. As ISDN backup works on a Master/Slave arrange-
ment (i.e. the X.21 Master makes and clears the ISDN calls) it is essential that the Slave codec be configured
before the Master so as to avoid the Master going into backup mode.
Begin by setting up one of the ISDN speed dials on the slave unit as a backup speed dial
– see section 5.7.1
Setup ISDN Directory or section 6.6.5 CNX-IP Speed Dials. As a slave unit will never dial the master the num-
bers are not critical but the unit must know what audio profile to use in backup mode. Select ISDN as the sec-
ondary connection and select the previously configured speed dial
– see section 5.5.2.3 ISDN as Secondary
Network Connection and section 6.6.1 CNX-Mode/Status
Next set up the X.21 primary connection on both units
– select X.21 as the primary connection and choose an
audio profile to use
– see section 5.5.1.1 X21 as Primary Network Connection and section 6.6.1 CNX-
Mode/Status/section 6.6.2 CNX-X21. Note that both units primary connection must have the same audio profile
and it must match the X.21 line speed
– but this can be different from the audio profile used for the backup
connection.
Finally set up one of the ISDN speed dials on the master unit as a backup speed dial
– see section 5.7.1 Setup
ISDN Directory or section 6.6.6 CNX-ISDN Speed Dials. The numbers programmed will be used to establish
the ISDN backup connection and the audio profile must match the one used in the slave unit for backup. Select
ISDN as the secondary connection and select the previously configured speed dial
– see section 5.5.2.3 ISDN
as Secondary Network Connection and section 6.6.1 CNX-Mode/Status
Whenever the primary connection is lost the master will connect to the slave over ISDN. Whenever the connec-
tion is restored the ISDN connection is dropped.
