Safety Warnings

READ ALL SAFETY WARNINGS BEFORE INSTALLING THIS EQUIPMENT

•  

DO NOT INSTALL, REMOVE, OR REWIRE THIS EQUIPMENT WITH POWER APPLIED.

 Have a

  qualified electrical technician install, adjust and service this equipment. Follow the Na�onal

  Electrical Code and all other applicable electrical and safety codes, including the provisions of the

  Occupa�onal Safety and Health Act (OSHA), when installing equipment.

•  

Circuit poten�als are at 115 or 230 VAC above earth ground

. Avoid direct contact with the printed

  circuit board or with circuit elements to prevent the risk of serious injury or fatality. Use a

  non-metallic screwdriver for adjus�ng the calibra�on trim pots. Use approved personal protec�on

  equipment and insulated tools if working on this drive with power applied.

•  Reduce the chance of an electrical fire, shock, or explosion by proper grounding, over-current

  protec�on, thermal protec�on, and enclosure. Follow sound maintenance procedures.

•  

Removing AC line power is the only acceptable method for emergency stopping.

 Do not use

  DC injec�on braking, decelera�ng to minimum speed, or coas�ng to a stop for emergency stopping.

  They may not stop a drive that is malfunc�oning. Removing AC line power is the only acceptable

  method for emergency stopping.

•  Line star�ng and stopping (applying and removing AC line voltage) is recommended for infrequent

  star�ng and stopping of a drive only. DC injec�on braking, decelera�ng to minimum speed, or

  coas�ng to a stop is recommended for frequent starts and stops. Frequent star�ng and stopping can

  produce high torque. This may cause damage to motors.

•  

Do not disconnect any of the motor leads from the drive

 unless power is removed or the drive is 

  disabled. Opening any one lead while the drive is running may destroy the drive.

•  Under no circumstances should power and logic level wires be bundled together.

•  Be sure poten�ometer tabs do no make contact with the poten�ometer enclosure. Grounding the

  input will cause damage to the drive.

•  Cau�on should be taken when opera�ng fan-cooled motors at low speeds because their fans may

  may not move sufficient air to properly cool the motor. ACE recommends “inverter-duty” motors

  when the speed range is beyond 10:1.

•  This product does not have internal solid state motor overload protec�on. It does not contain speed-

  sensi�ve overload protec�on, thermal memory reten�on, or provisions to receive and act upon

  signals from remote devices for over temperature protec�on. If motor protec�on is needed in the

  end-use product, it needs to be provided by addi�onal equipment in accordance with NEC standards.

Installation

Moun�ng

NEMA 4X cased drives come with two 0.73 inch (18.5 mm) conduit holes at the bo�om of the case.

The drives may be ver�cally wall mounted using the four 0.19 inch (5 mm) slo�ed holes on the

a�ached heat sink. For loads less than 5 amps, the drive may be bench mounted horizontally or

operated without moun�ng.

1. Install the moun�ng screws.

2. For access to the terminal strip, remove the six phillips screws on the front cover.

Wiring

Use 18 - 24 AWG wire for logic wiring. Use 14 - 16 AWG wire for AC line and motor wiring.

Shielding Guidelines

As a general rule, it is recommended to shield all conductors. If it is not prac�cal to shield power

conductors, it is recommended to shield all logic-level leads. If shielding of logic-level leads is not

prac�cal, the user should twist all logic leads with themselves to minimize induced noise. It may be

necessary to earth ground the shielded cable. If noise is produced by devices other than the drive,

ground the shield at the drive end. If noise is generated by the drive, ground the shield at the end

away from the drive. Do not ground both ends of the shield.

Fusing

The drives provide on board fusing for the AC line (L1, L2). Fuses are fast ac�ng fuses rated for

15A at 250 VAC.

Connections

Line Input

Connect the AC line power leads to terminals L1 and L2. The FWD/OFF/REV switch on the front cover is not

an AC line power switch, it is a combina�on enable/direc�on switch. When the switch on the front cover is 

set to the OFF posi�on, the drive is disabled but the circuit board is s�ll connected to the AC line. If a power

switch is desired, ACE recommends the use of a single-throw, double-pole master power switch. The switch

should be rated at a minimum of 125 VAC and 200% of motor current.

Motor

If using a three phase motor, connect the AC motor leads to terminals U, V, and W. If the motor does

not spin in the desired direc�on, power down the drive and swap any two of these connec�ons. If

using a single phase motor, connect the AC motor leads to terminals U and V. Refer to the

Opera�ons sec�on for possible wiring setups.

Speed Poten�ometer or Analog Input Signal

The speed poten�ometer on the front cover is pre-wired. To remotely install a poten�ometer, use a 10K ohm,

1/4 W poten�ometer. Connect the counter-clockwise end of the poten�ometer to S1, the wiper to S2, and the

clockwise end to S3. If the poten�ometer works inveresly of desired func�onality, (i.e. to increase motor speed,

you must turn the poten�ometer counterclockwise), power off the drive and swap the S1 and S3 connec�ons.

The drive may also follow a 0-5 VDC or 4-20 mA analog signal. Connect the signal common (nega�ve) to terminal

S1 and the signal reference (posi�ve) to terminal S2.

Direc�on Switch

The direc�on switch is pre-installed on the front cover. If a different direc�on switch is desired, wire a switch to

terminals E1 and DIR. When the connec�on is open, the motor will run in the forward direc�on. When the

connec�on is closed, the motor will run in reverse.

Enable

The enable switch is pre-installed on the front cover. If a diferent enable switch is desired, wire a switch to terminals

E1 and E2. When the connec�on is open, the motor will coast to minimum speed. When the switch is closed, the motor

will accelerate to set speed. 

Do not use the enable for emergency stopping.
