2902 MainStreet Technical Practices

Computer

A PC can be connected to a serial port either directly or indirectly (remotely through

a Hayes-compatible auto-answer modem). The computer must be running one of the

following software packages:

•

terminal emulation software

A PC running VT100-terminal emulation software can manage the node using the

NMTI. An EIA/TIA-232 compatible device, such as a PC, must be connected to

the other serial port for certain node management activities (such as configuration

database backup and restore).

•

Craft Interface Node Manager

A PC running the Craft Interface Node Manager software can manage the node

using the Craft Interface Node Manager.

•

5620 NM

A PC or a Sun workstation running 5620 NM software can manage the node

using the NMTI. The node manager is sometimes referred to as the NOC.
A 5620 NM connected directly to a 2902 MainStreet system can back up, verify

and restore the configuration database; connected indirectly (via modem), it can

back up and verify, but not restore. For more details, see chapter 30 in

Maintenance

communications software

A PC running communications software can manage the node using the NMTI.

Table 11-1 lists guidelines for selecting serial port device types.
