1- Functional description
The Fluxgate advanSea Compass is a sensor from the S400 range
used to measure the Earth's magnetic field. A Fluxgate compass consists
of a ferromagnetic washer, an excitation coil and two detection coils. An
induction is created in the washer by a signal applied to the excitation coil.
The presence of an external magnetic field (terrestrial magnetic field)
induces an additional induction in the washer and produces distortions of
the signals coming from the detection coils. These signals are then
exploited by the electronics.
The terrestrial magnetic field is variable in time and in space, it is of the
order of 50μT is 0.5 Gauss. You will find the technical specifications
detailed later in this manual.
The REPEAT S400 display will be able to interpret NMEA0183 messages
received from the compass and display magnetic heading measurements.
It does not have a communication interface to the advanSea AS1 bus.
