Trapping type
Trapping type can present special prob-
lems. Avoid applying process colors to
type at small point sizes, because any
misregistration can make the text diffi-
cult to read. Likewise, trapping type at
small point sizes can result in hard-to-
read type. As with tint reduction, check
with your print shop before trapping
such type. For example, if you are print-
ing black type on a colored background,
simply overprinting the type onto the
background may be enough.
To trap type, you can put a copy of the
text behind the original, and create the
trap line as a stroke set to overprint.
You can also trap type by first convert-
ing it to outlines with the Create Outline
filter. You can then create a trap for it
as you would with any other graphic
object. However, when you convert type
to outlines, hinting is lost. Hinting opti-
mizes how type prints at small point
sizes on printers with a resolution of
600 dots per inch (dpi) or less. Also, you
cannot edit text after you convert it to
outlines, because it is no longer type.
