Placing EPS files

When you use the Place command to 
insert an EPS image into existing Illus-
trator document, the Place command 
creates a link to an external file and 
does not include a copy of the file in the 
document.

Depending on how you save the Illustra-
tor document, you can retain the link 
between the placed EPS file and its orig-
inal application, or you can break the 
link and 

include the EPS file as an ele-

ment in the Illustrator file

. You can posi-

tion the placed EPS image anywhere on 
the page, and you can apply transforma-
tion attributes, such as scaling, rotating, 
reflecting, and shearing; however, you 
cannot otherwise change the placed file. 
To convert the elements in an EPS image 
to Illustrator objects that can be modi-
fied, use the Open command to open 
the EPS file; you can then modify the 
artwork in the new document or copy 
and paste the artwork into any existing 
Illustrator document.
